Energy on a Leash — What Your Pet is Reflecting Back to You

Updated: Oct 20

I love this time of year — the air is crisp, the mosquitoes have finally retreated, and the trees look absolutely beautiful. It’s the perfect season to get outdoors, breathe in nature, and let the dogs enjoy it too.

Of course, it’s most enjoyable as long as I have plenty of time for the essential sniffing stops and the all-important task of ensuring that every busy squirrel gets safely back up its tree.

When I’m out in the woods — relaxed, present, and soaking in the peace of the season — all is well. My energy is calm, and so are my dogs. (Well… as long as those squirrels cooperate!)

But have you ever noticed how your walks can feel completely different depending on your mood? On some days, your dog glides beside you in sync — and on others, it’s like everything’s off: pulling, barking, zero focus.

It’s all about energy — that invisible line of connection between you and your pet. The leash isn’t just a tool; it’s an energetic thread, a reflection of your shared communication.

When you grab the leash feeling stressed or distracted or rushed as I too often am , your body tightens, your breath shortens, and your dog feels it instantly. Animals are incredibly attuned to our inner world — they pick up on even the smallest shifts in energy.  And if I try to take my dogs out when I’m like that?  Chaos ensues!

The beautiful part? You can shift that energy anytime, with just a few moments of awareness.

Before your next walk, try this simple Reiki Inspired Energy Reset Ritual:

🌿 Pause and Breathe — Take a deep breath before clipping the leash. Feel your feet on the ground.

🌎 Ground Yourself — Imagine roots growing from your feet deep into the earth, anchoring you in calm.

💛 Hand to Heart — A quick Reiki moment*: place your hand over your heart and focus on sending your breath gently to your lower belly.  (*this is just a moment of bringing your energy back – reiki attunement not required!)

Set an Intention — “We walk together calmly and enjoy this time with each other.”

It only takes 30 seconds — but it changes everything.

After your walk, take a moment to reflect:

  • What was my energy like today?

  • How did my pet respond?

You may start to notice patterns — and that awareness opens the door to deeper balance and connection, for both of you.

Your pet isn’t just walking beside you; they’re mirroring your energy, helping you tune in, slow down, and walk through life with more peace.
